Is Veganism here to stay?
Veganuary is skyrocketing since the campaign first launched in 2014, with a record number of people (over half a million) participating in 2021. It successfully made media waves this year and highlighted the major issues caused by animal agriculture, with more than 1,500 Veganuary media stories hitting newspapers and televisions across the globe.
As Ed Winters, aka Earthling Ed, mentions in his latest video: “it gives people the opportunity to evaluate how they feel about topics such as animal exploitation and the climate crisis and their role in perpetuating these issues.”
But is veganism here to stay?
Veganism has increased in accessibility with over 825 vegan products and with new vegan menus launched this January alone. Demand also drives up plant-based food provisions in supermarkets and restaurants, establishing veganism firmly on the map throughout the year.
According to a poll by YouGov, more than a third of people in the UK are interested in becoming vegan today, with one in eight home-prepared meals being completely vegan and less than two-thirds of meals involving meat.
A clear indication that our food system is shifting.
Social media, influencers and celebrity chefs alike show us daily how colourful, varied and delicious vegan food can be. No matter what your favourite dish is, there is most likely a veganised version on Pinterest, such as this Turkey-less Roast from our recipe section; this was a hit at the Christmas table – it’s made from seitan (wheat gluten) and cleverly covered in re-hydrated bean curd to create a hyper-realistic ‘skin’ and makes a great Sunday roast. Vegan meringues, macarons, mayonnaise, there is nothing we can’t make!

Most supermarkets started offering alternatives for dairy milks, cheese, butter, cream and even eggs. However, it’s just as simple to quickly create your own almond milk or swap out the scrambled egg for scrambled tofu.
